Humana was founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 1961 as a nursing home company. In 1974, Humana developed the HMO product and soon became one of the largest for-profit managed health care companies in the United States. By 1983, Humana had become the largest provider of private hospital rooms in the country. In 1986, Humana took on another industry – insurance – when it acquired Metropolitan Life’s Medicorp subsidiary. This made Humana one of the few companies to offer both health insurance and health care services.
In the early 1960s, Humana’s founder, David A. Jones Sr., had the vision to provide quality health care to as many people as possible. His idea was to build a company that could own and operate hospitals, giving patients more choices and control over their care.
Jones bought his first nursing home in 1961 and named it Humana Hospital Louisville. He quickly added more facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1974, he launched Humana Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) plans in Kentucky—one of the first HMOs in the country.
By 1983, Humana owned or operated 106 hospitals across the United States with more than 20,000 beds—making it the largest private hospital system in the nation. That same year, Jones took the company public so he could raise money to buy more hospitals.
In 1986, Jones made a major move into the insurance business when Humana bought Metropolitan Life’s Medicorp subsidiary. This gave Humans the ability to offer both health insurance and health care services—something very few other companies could do at the time.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, Jones began divesting some of Humana’s hospital operations so he could focus on building the company’s insurance business. By 2003, Humana was one of the largest publicly traded health benefits companies in the United States.
In recent years, Humana has been focused on diversifying its business and expanding its reach. The company has acquired several businesses outside of its core competencies, including pharmacy benefit manager pharmacy management (PBM) company XLHealth in 2012 and care management company Carefx in 2014. In 2015, the company announced plans to merge with another large health insurer, Aetna. The merger was completed in 2018, making Humana one of the largest health insurance companies in the country.
